Progress at the English Avenue School

AFHA is still hard at work in the English Avenue community! As plans continue to develop, we remain committed to providing support and design assistance for the English Avenue School.  Tomorrow morning, Saturday May 19th, volunteers armed with paper, tape measures and flashlights will help us mark another key milestone, the full building measure! We will gather at 9:00 am, split into teams and set out to measure all 40,000 +, yes 40,000 square feet of the building interior and exterior.  This is a major step for program development and we English Avenue Schoolare super excited this day has arrived!

In addition to the project milestone, we are also marking an important step for our chapter.  The building measure will be our first project that qualifies for IDP credits! Championed by chapter volunteer, Andrew Telker and supported by AFH national, we are now approved to offer architecture students IDP credit hours.  You do have to join the AFH chapter network as a paid member so please don’t hesitate to contact us with questions about the new process.  You can reach us at volunteers@afhatlanta.org.  This is super great for our chapter and for the folks that need it.  However, AFHA remains come one, come all, architect or not where our volunteers are concerned.  We will keep you posted on plenty of  volunteer opportunities as we plan for post measure work.  For tomorrow, keep your interwebs peeled for progress tweets and pics by following us on twitter @AFHAtlanta!

EAC Update & a Celebration of Able Mable!

Looking to learn more about AFH Atlanta’s work with the Greater Vine Cities Opportunity Program and get all the lastest news on the English Avenue Campus?  Want to experience a great night of Jazz and help one of Atlanta’s most treasured citizens celebrate her birthday while raising money for the English Avenue Project?  Well, AFH Atlanta has two events to help you out!   First we’re so excited to have our chairman Rick Glassman speaking at very first English Avenue Community Campus Town Hall meeting.  The event is free and will be Saturday, November 20, 2010 10am-12pm at the Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church.  The honorable Mayor Kasim Reed will be speaking, as well as Able Mable and, of course, Rick among others. Then that same evening, we are truly honored to be a part of what is sure to be a great night – it’s Able Mable Thomas’ Birthday!  And in true Able Mable fashion, she’s taking the opportunity to give the gifts back to her community.  She’s hosting a Birthday Celebration and benefit for the new English Avenue Campus called “Jazz at Sundown”.  It’s a festive evening of great jazz music featuring Ojeda Penn and vocalists, Chandra Currelley and Angelica Tucker.  All proceeds will be used to renovate the historic 100-year old English Avenue Elementary School into a state-of-theart, green technology, global, community center.  This wonderful event will take place from 7-9pm at English Avenue Yards 781 Wheeler Street, NW, Studio 11 (Behind the Girls & Boys Club), Atlanta, GA 30318.  To purchase tickets, contact the Greater Vine City Opportunities Program, Inc. at 404-921-8681. Tickets are only $20 in advance ($30 at the door).
